These streets were in utter chaos. Supergirl couldn't believe what was going on here. S.T.A.R. labs had contacted her right after she had gotten home from school. She had made her way there and they had teleported her instantly to their branch in San Francisco. Now, she was trying to fight and stop as many of these freaky metahumans as possible. Who were they? She didn't know. As a matter of fact, she barely knew anything about their supposed leader, The Joker. And with what little she knew, the Joker was supposed to have died 25 years ago.
"And you're the last one here," Supergirl said as she dusted her hands. She had just finished tying a few of the Joker's goons to a street pole just outside of the convenient store they had been holding up.
"And don't you guys come back here."

The view of San Francisco wasn't much better from above. Mayhem reigned through the streets and pillars of smoke drifted up until the wind carried it away. Even with the loud whirring roar of the helicopter in his ears, Alec thought he could hear the mad cackling and shouts of civilians. He fronted surveying things from above as the helicopter went into a hard turn around a skyscraper. One of his handlers from Checkmate was explaining the scenario and it's timeline. Information was still limited and very little was confirmed. Most reports and the visuals of the metahumans and thugs involved seemed to indicate one of Gotham's more infamous residents the Joker. However, it was widely believed that the Joker had been killed twenty-five years ago so someone was either trying to take up the crown as the Clown Prince of Crime or someone was just using the name to stir up old fears.
"Most of these subjects possess unstable minds. My telepathy is having trouble gleaning the truth from them. I shall have to narrow my efforts and try to hunt down one with actual information." The Manhunter reported in his even, dry tone. He turned his flat, lightless eyes towards his handler who considered the situation.
Before a reply could be given, however, the pilot of the helicopter began shouting into the head-sets and banked hard to the right. As the vehicle lurched he could see a small group of clowns on a nearby rooftop. A narrow trail of smoke lingered in the air above and in front of them and at it's end was a rocket they had fired at the helicopter. The rocket screamed it's way by in a narrow miss and the pilot guided the copter back onto it's path.
Wordlessly, Alec stood up and braced himself in the doorway. He narrowed his eyes which flashed a featureless, glowing red for a moment before returning to normal. He pushed off and leaped out of the doorway and into the open air. He spread out his arms and used his shape-shifting to form a pair of webbed flaps under his arms, connected to his sides that extended down to his ankles like a flying squirrel. While he couldn't actually fly, he could glide for a short distance.
The clowns leveled firearms at him and he went into stealth mode first to confuse them. As they stood there blinking, he closed his arms at his sides and fell like a dart towards them. Finally, at the last minute he went intangible and sank into the rooftop. He caught himself just on the other side of the roof and swung himself back up into the ceiling and ghosted up behind them.
The first two, he caught with an intangible punch which brought them down like a stun gun. he went fully visible and punched the other one dead on while he stared in shock. Alec bent and scanned their sleeping minds but found nothing vital to the situation. He went intangible again and this time let himself ghost all the way down to the ground floor of the building.
He stepped out the front door just in time to see a young woman securing more of the dastardly clowns to a pole in front of a store. From his time in reading up on Checkmate's files and learning about Earth's culture, he recognized the symbol she wore. He hadn't been aware of someone taking up the S-shield but was somewhat relieved to know that not everyone on the streets was there to cause trouble.
"Excuse me, miss?" He inquired in his steady, deadpan tone. He approached her slowly so as not to startle her and with his hands raised in a pacifying gesture. "I was wondering if you had any idea of what happened here?"

Just after finally securing the wires she had used to tie the villains up with, Supergirl heard someone approaching her from behind. Quickly, she turned around to face him. He seemed to be just an ordinary man, though she was well aware that this was no place for ordinary men. This was a one-woman job, and despite how many metahumans there were here, she needed to deal with them by herself.
"I could just as easily ask you the same question," Supergirl spat at him. Right now, she actually had somewhat of a short fuse, which was rather unlike her, but she couldn't help it. Criminals made her so upset and there were so many of them here that it was overwhelming.
If only I were as fast as the real Superman they'd all be behind bars right now, she thought in a mundane tone. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Her speed was limited far slower than the true Superman, which she had been created after. She turned to the man who had approached her.
"I'm sorry, but I don't have time to chat right now. There's a lot of butt-kicking to do," Supergirl said. After this, she jumped up and took to the skies to fly away. She would go back to scanning from an aerial perspective.

She seemed a bit out of sorts, Alec observed. His face remained neutral with only an arched brow in response to her rather curt reply. He stopped a few feet from her and paused to look around the area, sliding his hands into the pockets of his heavy black trenchcoat. A'lkk supposed it was only natural in response to such widespread and seemingly random carnage. However, the direness of the situation only drove home the need for a level head.
Her thought zipped past his own mind before he had a chance to filter it. The Martian knew that the people of Earth felt telepathy was rather intrusive and often didn't react kindly. He respected their privacy for the most part but that didn't stop the occasional strongly backed random thought from crossing his mind.
As he opened his mouth in an attempt to reassure her, she was already speaking again. Before he could even react to that she was already in the air. Alec watched her for several seconds and then simply stood there in the middle of the street for several seconds more. The introduction of human DNA into his system had caused a few of the typical Martian abilities to be absent in this form. Some of the Checkmate scientists assured him that a few more of them would develop in time but the lack of flight was...
Irritating.
"I certainly don't intend to take up your time but I believe I may be able to assist you in restoring order to the city,"He sent telepathically towards her mind. His voice rang as clear and natural as though he were right beside her, despite the fact that she was physically departing. "At the very least I may be able help to find their ring-leader."
He paused politely while she processed that.

W-where's that coming from?
Supergirl stopped in mid-flight. It was rather strange. She was certain that someone had said something to her, though at the same time, she had heard nothing. It had to be a telepath. She had never seen one before, and she especially had never conversed with one, but nonetheless, she found it intriguing. Because of this, she decided to come back to the ground level, now only levitating a couple meters above him in the air.
"What are you?" She asked him quite curiously. She was perplexed, and by now had already nearly forgotten that she was on a mission to capture criminals. She was sidetracked by him. Supergirl crossed her arms and waited for him to respond.
"I'm Supergirl by the way," she said, now remembering that it was most polite to introduce yourself before asking someone else's name. It was proper etiquette just as S.T.A.R. labs had taught her. She reached down to shake hands with him.

Manhunter waited for her to return and then reached up to shake her hand before nodding. He had been curious as to how to address her, despite her costume hinting at her identity. He was rather curious as to her origins as he had understood there to as few Kryptonians left as Martians. Tempted as he was, however, he refrained from searching her mind for the answer or for other clues as to her identity. So far she had proven to be a potential ally and on the side of the law and he tried not to read the minds of those on the same side.
"I am designated the Martian Manhunter." Alec introduced himself with another nod. As he spoke, he allowed his eyes to flash glowing red and his skin to take on a green hue for just a moment before reverting to normal. "It is nice to meet you Supergirl, I was unaware that Superman's legacy continued."
"Of course, not all old names are such a relief to hear." He added, glancing meaningfully at one of the supposed Joker's fallen henchmen. He looked up and down the street for any further signs of criminal activity.
"I have yet to see the one called Joker yet but I have not been in the city long." Alec explained.

The Martian Manhunter. Supergirl had heard of him before. He had quite a legacy in the past. Surprisingly, despite the fact that she had taken up the mantle of one of the most famous super heroes in America, she didn't know much about her predecessors, nor the Justice League. A lot of that information had been kept from her for a variety of reasons. Many of those reasons she didn't even know.
Regardless, she knew a bit about what was going on right now. She knew about this Joker going through town right now, and the trouble which he was causing. Hopefully they'd be able to put an end to this soon, but for now, they could only do their best to put these meta-humans back into their jail cells.
"I'm pretty sure there are more important things to worry about than that clown."

"Possibly," Manhunter agreed in his usual monotone. He paused a moment as he considered the matter becoming almost eerily still, much like a wax statue. His eyes even ceased blinking for an unusual span of time. After a moment, Alec's head tilted thoughtfully to the side and dark eyes flicked over to Supergirl once again. "However, capturing the person behind this event could prevent similar incidents here and in other cities."
"There is also a chance that this is a distraction for some other goal entirely." Alec paused. There was an almost microscopic lowering of his eyebrows to indicated he was troubled. "Psychopaths are difficult to anticipate."
"However, given that I have no evidence that there even is a Joker or similar. leader or where to find such an individual, I believe you are corre Our efforts will be of more use in quelling these metahuman riots."
"I think it would be wise for the moment to pool our talents." Alec stated logically. He seemed to pause hesitantly, as though he had suddenly realized he was going to have to say something awkward. Which was a neat trick for someone with a near perpetual poker face and consistently deadpan delivery.
"I am...unable to fly, regretfully." He said slowly, glancing to the side."If we travel together I am afraid I must impose upon you to carry me."

Supergirl realized that the Martian man was probably right by what he had said in his reasoning for going after the Joker. Nonetheless, this wasn't as pressing to her as going ahead and trying to catch as many of the metahumans as possible. However, for her to do that, she really didn't need any help. She could do this on her own.
"Thank you, but I will not be requiring your assistance, Manhunter. I wish you the best of luck," and with that she flew off in the opposite direction. She was speedily heading for yet another crime scene.
